Wearing Your Issues On Your Sleeve
Mychillpills.com – A new social network, focusing on mental and social health problems, has gone live and is already changing the way we think about social networking.

Long Beach, CA (PRunderground) August 14, 2008 - Mychillpills.com, a new social network has gone live, claiming “We’ve Got Issues – Mental Health for the Masses.” With this tongue in cheek mantra in mind, mychillpills.com has made an attempt to provide users with a safe and non-threatening place in which to share their problems and work them out with like minded people. The aim is not to be too clinical; none of the users on mychillpills claims any medical training, but just to provide people with “issues” a fun place in which to surf.
Sean Bowen, the site’s creator, is quick to emphasize that the aim is not to sit around feeling depressed with others. “I had been plagued with mental issues for a long time. Depression, anxiety, you name it, I got it. Still, surfing the web gave me all kinds of depressing forums that made me feel even worse,” Bowen said in a conversation.
“Basically, mychillpills.com is the child of frustration. I wanted a place where I could talk with people who had problems, but also not get too bogged down by depression. At least, not more than I actually was.” In Sean’s mind, if you are already complaining about your problems, then why not find a way to have a little fun with them as well? “You’re already depressed, and there is nothing that anybody can do about it. The least you can is laugh about how much life sucks.” So is mychillpills a celebration of depression? It appears so, and it also appears to be working. The site’s membership has quadrupled over the past few weeks, with active members, blog posts, vibrant forums and more.
The fact that the site’s creator has had emotional problems of his own is one of the reasons the site does not talk down at users, making them feel like they are among their own. Sean told us that he was tired of other people giving their own advice. “Everybody’s a critic, and everyone thinks they know best. But the funny thing about depressed people is that they don’t connect to people all that well, at least, I don’t. And people who have not been through depression simply cannot understand the struggle that it entails.” In essence, misery loves company, and having others who can more closely relate to you than any random user on any of the other huge social networks is a big plus.
Of course, empathy only goes so far and no further. The site is no substitute for seeing a mental care specialist, but Sean says that he hopes that people will see their doctors, and then come home to complain about them on mychillpills.
