Boston, MA (PRunderground) May 04, 2008 – Over 40,000 generous supporters braved rainy weather to take part in Project Bread’s 40th Walk for Hunger. Walkers of all ages (the oldest was 82) from a spectrum of economic circumstances participated in this event dedicated to feeding hungry people. They raised an estimated $3.8 million for emergency programs across Massachusetts.
“It’s incredibly moving to see thousands of Walkers show their support for their hungry neighbors on a day like today,” said Ellen Parker, executive director of Project Bread - The Walk for Hunger. “They came prepared for the weather, wearing ponchos and carrying umbrellas. They’re an inspiration, and a wakeup call that the people of this state care about those who are struggling to put bread on their table. And this year, we’ve never needed them more.”
The Walk for Hunger provides vital resources for the state’s rising number of hungry individuals and families. Its proceeds provide funding for 400 emergency food pantries, soup kitchens, food banks, and food salvage programs throughout the Bay State. These programs annually serve 42.1 million emergency meals.
“Today’s rain shows us the true grit of our supporters,” said Parker. “But it will also hinder us from raising the $4 million desperately needed by emergency food programs that are facing steep increases in the cost of food and fuel.
“I urge all who did not walk because of the rain, or who cut their walk short, to go back to their sponsors to collect all their pledges. If you did walk today, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts. But if you could not walk, please tell your sponsors that we need their help more than ever. We cannot allow the state’s hunger safety net to be rained out.”
Mayor Menino was undeterred by the early morning clouds and greeted corporate sponsors and media friends to thank Project Bread for organizing this event, which over the past 40 years has involved 952,800 Walkers, who’ve walked 19,098,800 miles, and raised over $69 million dollars to help those in need in Boston and around the state.
Project Bread strongly urges everyone to consider making a special “Rainy Day” donation to help feed hungry families by donating online at http://www.projectbread.org/walk or calling 617-723-5000. “We also know that in the year ahead, with a gallon of gas currently costing $3.79 and a gallon of milk at $4.29, there are very hard times in store for low-income families. This year, every dollar counts.”
