Climate change is having a devastating effect on our food basket. In Himachal Pradesh, rising temperatures are causing apples yields to fall as farmers are shifting to other crops. Apple orchards are shifting to cooler villages in higher altitudes, new infrastructure has to be developed and apples have to travel longer distances to urban markets. Similar fall in yields of ground nut crops and wheat, due to climate change, have also been reported in other parts of India.
“Climate change is a people’s issue” said Gautam Gosh as he captivated audiences with his music “Can you do something for your mother (earth)? People around the world have shown that any, Any dream can be fulfilled if we work towards it. I am here to fulfill my dream of making my mother earth a better place to live in.”
“Once you bake the soil it cannot be the same anymore, it is true about the climate and environment also. As an artist and a human being I feel responsible and am here to support this cause and ensure that our children get a better earth to live on” said Mr. Shafi Quraishy, a renowned painter from Delhi.
Oxfam India urges the community to be the change by reducing our individual contribution to the green house gas emission by conserving energy and water, taking the train instead of the plane, pool our car rides to school and office, use energy efficient appliances, recycle our waste, donate, share and reuse where we can and say no to plastics.
