American Sentinel Launches Nurse Wellness Blog Series to Help Nurses Actively Focus on Balancing all Aspects of Their Well-being

AURORA, CO (PRUnderground) July 20th, 2017

American Sentinel University today announced its partnership with the American Nurses Association (ANA) to promote the Healthy Nurse, Healthy Nation initiative and launched a new four-part ‘Nurse Wellness’ blog series focused on helping nurses balance all aspects of well-being: physical, mental, emotional, social, personal, spiritual, intellectual, and professional, available at https://www.americansentinel.edu/blog/tag/Wellness/.

The ANA’s Healthy Nurse, Healthy Nation initiative was created to serve as a reminder for nurses to take care of themselves to better care for their patients, as well as contribute to overall public health.

“Nurses that are healthy, well rested, and safe on the job, have more life- and job-satisfaction overall which has a significant impact on patient outcomes and quality of care,” says Elaine Foster, Ph.D., MSN, RN, Dean of Nursing and Healthcare Programs at American Sentinel University. “We are thrilled to partner with the American Nurses Association on this important initiative to help raise a heightened awareness about nurse wellness and safety.”

The spotlight on wellness is a response to the ANA’s 2016 Health Risk Appraisal that revealed some troubling trends:

-Nurses are more likely to be overweight than the population at large

-Nurses are less likely to get enough sleep than the general population

-Nurses often eat on the run, and only 16 percent are eating the recommended daily amount of fruits and vegetables

-Busy nurses are neglecting exercise

-Occupational risks continue to be a workplace concern for RNs

-Nurses report workplace stress levels that are far above the national average

In response to these trends, the ANA has launched the Healthy Nurse, Healthy NationTM Grand Challenge (HNHN GC). The challenge focuses on five fundamental indicators of wellness: sleep, nutrition, exercise, safety, and quality of life.

The idea is that, if all, or even most of the 3.6 million RNs in the country increase their wellness, the effects would ripple out to their families, communities, and ultimately their patients.

“American Sentinel University is a dedicated partner in the Healthy Nurse, Healthy NationTM campaign and will be supporting our nursing students, faculty and staff as they join the initiative,” says Dr. Foster. “As frontline caregivers and the healthcare industry’s largest subset of workers protecting, promoting and optimizing our nation’s health, we urge all nurses to join the challenge to better themselves, their patients and the community.”

The ‘Nurse Wellness’ blog series will run through August 1, 2017.
