Building a Sustainable Ethical Pest & Building Inspection Business

Industry: Home & Garden

The pest and building inspection industries are big business and consumers are relying heavily on their inspector to do the job right. How do they choose the right one?

Australia (PRUnderground) March 3rd, 2014

The pest and pre-purchase inspection industries are big business and consumers are relying heavily on their inspector to do the job right.  The tragic stories we hear about termites causing financial ruin and even marriage break-ups could be avoided if property owners have regular inspections The question is how do you choose an inspector above the thousands out there?

Enter Housesafe inspections, who are training and educating building and pest inspectors around the country and New Zealand. Housesafe is the only organization in Australia and New Zealand equipped in educating the building and pest inspection industry. “To date, we have accredited over 840 property inspectors nationwide” says Howard Ryan, the Managing Director and Founder of Housesafe who has been in the property inspection industry for over forty years.

The intensive training is for pre-purpose inspections, mould, asbestos ID, expert witness development, swimming pool and pool barrier safety, (Swimming Pool Compliance Certification to be released in March 2014 to tie in with the new swimming pool laws of NSW), strata inspections, new construction defect, warranty inspections, dispute prevention, pests, and management training.

The training methodology is based purely on Australian Standards and the reason why and how to apply them in a mitigated form. Simple additives like ADR “Alternative Dispute Resolution” and DAPS “Dispute Avoidance Processes” enlighten each trainee inspector whose ages ranging from 20 to 70. The most comprehensive delivery and qualification of a true professional comes from the results of their assignments which demonstrates to Housesafe what each student has learnt from the course.

Wives and partners of the inspectors may choose to become accredited themselves. They can sit in on all the courses as many times as they wish so they can to be educated on how to assist their husbands and/or partners in the administration required in running a business and to help prevent claims and court disputes evolving. “Surprisingly, what we are seeing the women are proving to be better building inspectors, pest inspectors and pre-purchase inspectors in a predominantly male-dominated industry” says Ryan.

Ryan has also developed and authored “The Housesafe Way” textbook with over 300 colour pages of required criteria to inspect Australian Properties in a compliant, competent, risk-free and mitigated manner. The book was created for inspectors so then can refer to it and build an ethical and sustainable business.  “Taking shortcuts will lead you to insolvency and potentially bankruptcy before your very eyes” warns Howard.
