Can Early Intervention Slow or Even Prevent the Progression of Your Child’s Myopia (Near-Sightedness)? – explains Dr. Faheem Inayatali, a 2022 ThreeBestRated® award-winning pediatric optometrist in Houston, TX.

Myopia, or near-sightedness, is the most common eye condition in the world that occurs in nearly 1 out of 3 children. Myopia is a condition where distant objects appear out of focus and remains blurry unless they are brought close to your child’s eyes. Studies show that genetics, digital screen time, and inadequate outdoor time all affect myopia progression. Myopia may lead to challenges in activities or learning for children due to reduced vision. The greater myopia, the higher the risks for significant eye diseases. Myopia usually begins in childhood, and unless treated, progresses into adolescence. So, what can we do to prevent our children’s eyesight from getting worse each year? Let's seek a professional's advice.

Who can explain this to us better than an Eye Doctor? So, we tapped into the knowledge of Dr. Faheem Inayatali, a 2022 ThreeBestRated® award-winning pediatric optometrist in Houston to learn about it.

He says there are many things we can do to become aware and slow down the progression of Myopia. They are:

  • First and foremost, ensure your child receives an annual eye exam to check for myopia and other eye conditions. The first eye exams should be at 6 months, 18 months, then 36 months of age.

  • Follow the 20/20/20 rule: Take a break every 20 minutes from digital devices for 20 seconds by looking 20 feet away to relax the eye muscles.

  • Try to spend more time outdoors, at least 1-2 cumulative hours per day.

  • If your child has early symptoms of myopia such as difficulty seeing distant objects (ie. blurred vision), trouble focusing up close, or experiencing headaches, he/she should have a comprehensive eye exam.

  • If your child has been diagnosed with myopia, seek preventative care by enrolling in a myopia management program.

  • Early intervention may slow and even prevent the development of your child’s myopia. Technology can now measure the progression over time to give you peace of mind.

“Myopia occurs when the eye grows longer than it should, causing light to inaccurately focus in front of the retina. Glasses are a tool to help your child see, however, they do not slow down the progression myopia, or near-sightedness.” – Dr. Inayatali
