Cold Sore Virus (HSV-1) May Cause Brain Damage and Alzheimer’s Disease; CBCD Reviews the Evidence

“Infected with the oral herpes virus (HSV-1)? The CBCD recommends taking Novirin or Gene-Eden-VIR.” – Greg Bennett, CBCD

Dr. Ruth Itzhaki wrote in a recent study that the oral herpes virus (HSV-1) normally resides in the body in a latent form. However, “under certain conditions, for example stress, immunosuppression, and peripheral infection,” and over time, the virus causes “cumulative damage and eventually development of Alzheimer’s disease (AD).” (1). Dr. Itzhaki is from the Faculty of Life Sciences, University of Manchester in the UK. Research also shows that “HSV1 enters the brain in older age, as a consequence of the decline in the immune system with age.” Further, Dr. Itzhaki was able to obtain evidence indicating that HSV1 reactivates in the brain and causes an active infection, perhaps recurrently. Active HSV-1 infection causes severe damage and usually leads to cell death. “It was therefore suggested that HSV1 might periodically reactivate in the brain during episodes of stress, immunosuppression or inflammation, causing cumulative … damage … leading eventually to the development of AD.” (1)

The Center for the Biology of Chronic Disease (CBCD) recommends that individuals infected with the latent oral herpes virus (HSV-1) take Novirin or Gene-Eden-VIR. These natural antiviral products were tested by Hanan Polansky and Edan Itzkovitz from the CBCD in two clinical studies that followed FDA guidelines. The studies showed that the Novirin and Gene-Eden-VIR formula is effective against the herpes simplex virus, and other viruses. The clinical studies were published in the peer reviewed, medical journal Pharmacology & Pharmacy, the first, in a special edition on Advances in Antiviral Drugs.  Study authors wrote that, “individuals infected with the HSV … reported a safe decrease in their symptoms following treatment with Gene-Eden-VIR.” (2)  The study authors also wrote that, “we observed a statistically significant decrease in the severity, duration, and frequency of symptoms.” (2)

Both products can be ordered online on the Novirin and Gene-Eden-VIR websites.

Novirin and Gene-Eden-VIR are natural antiviral dietary supplements. Their formula contains five natural ingredients: Selenium, Camellia Sinesis Extract, Quercetin, Cinnamomum Extract, and Licorice Extract. The first ingredient is a trace element, and the other four are plant extracts. Each ingredient and its dose was chosen through a scientific approach. Scientists at polyDNA, the company that invented and patented the formula, scanned thousands of scientific and medical papers published in various medical and scientific journals, and identified the safest and most effective natural ingredients against latent viruses. To date, Novirin and Gene-Eden-VIR are the only natural antiviral products on the market with published clinical studies that support their claims.

It is important to note that “in the last 23 years, many studies have been published – some 37 of these by groups other than (Dr. Itzhaki) – using diverse approaches and yielding diverse types of information, all of which explicitly support, or are consistent with, the proposed role for HSV1 in AD. In contrast, there have been very few publications describing contradictory data.” (1) In other words, many studies show that HSV-1 is involved in the development of Alzheimer’s disease.

How does the virus cause AD?

The oral herpes virus mostly infects a type of cell called an epithelial cell, which is found in the mouth. Once a person is infected, the virus replicates, and uses nerves to travel to the brain. Once in the brain, the virus establishes a latent infection. From time to time, the virus travels back to the original site of infection, replicates and causes the well-known clinical lesions (i.e., cold sores and blisters). (3)

In the brain, “it may cause acute neurological disorders like encephalitis [herpes simplex encephalitis (HSE)] or a mild, clinically asymptomatic, infection, or establish life-long latent infection.” (3) The weakening of the immune system, which occurs during aging, only serves to increase the viral damages. The virus is repeatedly found in the brains of those who develop Alzheimer’s disease, and in regions typically affected by the disease.

In light of this evidence, the CBCD recommends targeting the latent HSV-1 virus with Novirin or Gene-Eden-VIR. The formula of these natural antiviral products was designed to help the immune system target the latent HSV-1.

About CBCD

The Center for the Biology of Chronic Disease (https://www.cbcd.net) is a not-for-profit tax-exempt organization under section 501(c) 3 of the IRS tax code. The center’s mission is to advance the research on the biology of chronic disease and to accelerate the discovery of a cure for these diseases. The CBCD first published Dr. Hanan Polansky’s highly acclaimed “Purple” book, entitled “Microcompetition with Foreign DNA and the Origin of Chronic Disease” in 2003. In this book, he explains how foreign DNA fragments can cause many major diseases. The book has been read by more than 5,000 scientists around the world, and has been reviewed in more than 20 leading scientific journals. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
