Marlissa Gardner, owner of Emillions Art, a Naples-area art consulting firm, believes that art is an alternative form of investment that people often overlook. She discusses this very idea at an upcoming Green Hatters Group seminar on October 21.
Diversifying one’s portfolio is by and large the best way to minimize risk when it comes to wise investing and wealth building. Many people look into the more traditional options and spread their wealth carefully among assets like stocks, savings accounts, real estate, and even precious metals. Art is yet another viable way to diversify an investment portfolio—particularly among those who appreciate it.
A recent Bloomberg article notes that art is one of the most overlooked and underappreciated investment opportunities. According to Bloomberg, investors spent a mere $260 million on art back in 1995. Some 20 years later, people now spend close to $8 billion on art, and that number continues to climb. It just goes to show that adapting strategies related to value investing can certainly make money with art, but only if they know what to look for. Today, it’s more about finding unique pieces that aren’t considered mainstream. Simply put, buying art for investment purposes isn’t about immediately flipping it for a profit.
