Former Select Records Music Executive Wyatt Cheek mourns the passing of his most cherished wife, Lorraine Porter-Cheek.

New York (PRUnderground) June 7th, 2016

Former Select Records Music Executive Wyatt Cheek announced the passing of his most beloved wife, Lorraine Porter-Cheek. Cheek released this statement today:

Lorraine Carol Porter was born in St. Louis, Missouri, on March 18, 1957, to Leroy and Vernell Porter. The family migrated to Harlem, New York, where Lorraine spent her early childhood before finally settling in Brooklyn. Lorraine was a humble, naturally beautiful person, with a kind spirit, quiet confidence and remarkable intuition. She was reserved and believed wholeheartedly in being the “bigger person.” When provoked, however, through the courage of her convictions, Lorraine was well prepared to confront adversity. Lorraine met her soulmate and life partner Wyatt Cheek as a teenager on May 5, 1970, and they remained together ever since (with the exception of a few brief years in late high school and early college). They had one child, Taja Rae, whom Lorraine stayed home to nurture and teach during her formative first five years. She was the consummate mother and homemaker; her greatest joy was big family gatherings with abundant food.
Lorraine excelled in school as a student and became a lifelong learner. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Secondary Education / Recreation, Physical Education from Brooklyn College in 1980. She went on to earn two Master of Science degrees from Pace University, the first in Curriculum and Instruction (1989) and the second in Administration and Supervision (2001). Lorraine was a Licensed High School Physical Education Teacher for 36 years and held a License in Administration / Supervision. She taught health, math, science, and physical education to various grade levels in multiple Brooklyn schools and was appointed to Public School 6 in 1992, where she also served as UFT District 17 Chapter Leader for the last 8 years. Throughout her career, Lorraine was a volunteer coach for girls track, basketball, and volleyball, and boys varsity basketball—all sports that she excelled in, with the addition of tennis. Lorraine was also a partner with her husband in a real estate investment company.

Lorraine Carol Porter passed on June 1, 2016, in Manhattan, New York, during a brief hospitalization. Ms. Porter is survived by her husband, Wyatt Cheek; daughter, Taja; mother, Vernell; brothers, Leroy Jr., Norman, and Howard; several nieces, including Tauaishu and Lyndell; several nephews, including Dupree and Wiredell; a host of extended family and friends; and her cherished dog, Berkley. She was preceded in death by her father, Leroy; sister, Angela; and brother, Stephen. All services will be held on Thursday, June 9, 2016, at the Church of St. Mark Episcopal, 1417 Union Street, Brooklyn, New York 11213,(718) 7566607.

There will be a public viewing for family and friends from 3:30 to 5:30. The funeral service will begin at 5:30. A repast will be held at the church immediately following the service. Arrangements are being handled by Funeral Director Steven LeGall, (718) 7566607.
