Facility is a joint venture between Fresenius Kidney Care and St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital

Cornwall, NY (PRUnderground) February 21st, 2019

Fresenius Kidney Care, the dialysis division of Fresenius Medical Care North America and the nation’s leading network of dialysis facilities, hosted a ribbon cutting Wednesday, Feb. 13 at its newly expanded clinic at 19 Laurel Avenue in Cornwall, relocated from Newburgh, NY.

The clinic, which now includes a home hemodialysis option for patients, has added eight chairs and can treat a maximum of 200 patients a week, enabling Fresenius Kidney Care’s local team of expert medical professionals to better serve the Cornwall area’s growing dialysis community. In New York more than 29,600 patients require dialysis treatment.

Fresenius Kidney Care strives to empower people to thrive and live in the healthiest, fullest way possible – with kidney disease treatments that fit in with life, not the other way around. At-home dialysis – offers greater independence, convenience and health benefits to patients who would otherwise spend up to 12 hours a week in a center receiving the life-sustaining care.

“Home dialysis allows patients to integrate this life-sustaining treatment into their lifestyle and schedule in the most convenient way possible,” said Dr. Jeffrey Hymes, Chief Medical Officer for Fresenius Kidney Care. “We believe that home dialysis should be offered to all patients, and thanks to advances in technology, awareness and support, we are making this a reality.”

“We are excited for the opportunity to bring the highest quality care to people in Cornwall in need of dialysis,” said Evan Smith, Fresenius Kidney Care’s director of operations in the Hudson Valley and Worcester areas. “At Fresenius Kidney Care, we are committed to providing supportive care to people living with chronic kidney disease so that our patients can lead fuller, more vibrant lives.”

“We made a promise to this community to transform healthcare delivery, and with this new addition of outpatient dialysis services with Fresenius Kidney Care we are doing just that,” said Joan Cusack, McGuirk, President & CEO, St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital. “We work as very close colleagues and take a proactive approach to keeping our community healthy. I thank Fresenius Kidney Care for their leadership and look forward to many more years together.”

“This clinic will give folks in Eastern Orange County the freedom and flexibility to get their dialysis treatment on their own schedule,” said U.S. Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney (NY-18). “We need to increase home-health options, and building out training programs like this is a great step forward for dialysis patients.”

“Congratulations to the Fresenius Kidney Care here in Cornwall on their opening! Along with St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital, this clinic will work to ensure that quality treatment options are provided to patients and tailored to their individual needs,” said Sen. James Skoufis. “Options like home therapy can be life-changing for those receiving treatment at home. It’s incredibly important for patients to have agency in choosing their medical care and I’m thrilled to support this clinic in its pursuit of providing innovative healthcare.”

“The new dialysis center at St. Luke’s Cornwall is a welcome advancement for local residents who will now have access to critically needed medical services close to home,” said Assemblyman Colin Schmitt. “This is a positive step for our community and region.”

“St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital and Fresenius Kidney Care should be commended for bringing this type of quality health care to our region,” said Orange County Executive Steven M. Neuhaus. “This facility will provide residents with enhanced access to life-saving dialysis treatments at St. Luke’s and at their home. I’m appreciative of this investment into Orange County.”

One in seven adults will develop chronic kidney disease, with many not detecting the condition until they have lost more than 90 percent of their kidney function. More than 660,000 Americans live with end stage renal disease, or kidney failure, which requires either a transplant or dialysis to remove waste from the blood, maintain safe levels of potassium and sodium and control blood pressure. Currently, 468,000 people in the U.S. depend on dialysis as a life sustaining treatment. The leading causes of kidney disease are high blood pressure and diabetes.
