76% of Seniors who live at home feel lonely and socially isolated. That’s one of the sad findings identified by GreyBuddy® – a “Happier Seniors” Social Enterprise providing 24/7 Buddy Support to Lonely Seniors – after studying over 1,000 live-at-home seniors across North America, Europe, Asia and Australia.

GreyBuddy® identified 4 major reasons for this high level of loneliness and social isolation:

1) LIVE ALONE: 87% of seniors who are lonely live alone at home – because they either lost their spouse or partner to illness or died from old age, had divorced (or separated) in earlier years, or remained single.

2) LACK OF ATTENTION FROM BUSY FAMILY MEMBERS: 79% of lonely seniors have children. However they complain of the little time their children (and their families) have for them. While they understand their children may have their own families to take care of and may have busy lives, they lament they only receive the odd phone call and/or visit in any given week or month (sometimes stretching to months), instead of more frequent and regular contacts.

3) LACK OF FRIENDS AND COMPANIONSHIP: 78% of lonely seniors have lost most of their friends, or lost connections with friends – they outlive their friends, or their friends have moved into nursing homes further away or relocated to other areas, or they simply lost touch and never reconnected. At this age, they have great difficulties building new relationships and friendships. They therefore do not have the same level of human connections they had in their younger days. Their TV, radio and even pets often end up the only regular “social connections” they may have.

4) POOR OR DETERIORATING PHYSICAL HEALTH: 77% of lonely seniors experience some sort of health issue affecting their mobility – because of their limited mobility and/or limited ability to move around by themselves they end up staying home, alone, for the greater part of their time.

“These numbers are depressing, and show that a big part of our seniors are somewhat treated like a forgotten generation and cast aside” said Jerome Fontaine, CEO of GreyBuddy®. “At GreyBuddy® our philosophy is that our seniors deserve better. We want to do our bit to make (or re-establish) these missing human connections. We want to help these lonely seniors feel they matter, and for them to know that there is someone interested to talk to them and listen to them. That’s why at GreyBuddy® we are dedicated to fighting loneliness and social isolation of our seniors, one person at a time, to try to bring some warmth and happiness to them. Because that’s the right thing to do” he added.
