The play has its roots in an 1835 play “A Day Well Spent”, by John Oxenford. A farce adaptation was later done by Johann Nastroy, “Einen Jux will er sich machen”. Thornton Wilder adapted the farce from Nastroy into “The Merchant of Yonkers”, which he later revised and called “The Matchmaker.” After adapting the play into a musical it became “Hello Dolly” after producer David Merrick heard Louis Armstrong’s rendition of the song.

Bette Midler was last on Broadway with her 2013 one-woman play “I’ll Eat You Last: A Chat with Sue Mengers.” Broadway performances of Hello Dolly began on March 13, 2017 and the production formally opened up on April 20, 2017. Midler is a very talented actress and singer who can do justice to a role which singers of different ranges have starred in. Although Hello Dolly was originally written with Ethel Merman in mind, Bette Midler has been amazing in the role.
