Historic Palace of the Governors in Santa Fe Needs Renovations says Construction Reporter

Industry: Real Estate

The 400 year-old Palace of the Governors building in Santa Fe, designated a "National Treasure" needs repairs at many levels, including building stabilization.

Santa Fe, NM (PRUnderground) April 1st, 2015

The National Landmark is also one of only 57 designated “National Treasures” across the nation. Repairs on the building needed include repair of crumbling stucco, resurfacing and repairing the parapets, and stabilization of the building itself.

The Palace was constructed in 1610, and so has been the site for government meetings when the region was under the control of Spain, Mexico, and New Mexico.  In 1909 it became a state museum.

Other issues currently facing the Palace include the lack of a fire suppression system, out-of-date air conditioning and heating systems and exhibits in need of updating.  To address the need for exhibit upgrades, specifically, the Museum of New Mexico Foundation initiated a $3.5 million fundraising campaign.  However, these upgrades were to occur after fundamental stabilization and repairs of the building, dependent on capital outlay funds.

Capital outlay funds in the amount of $1.5 million were proposed for its renovations to the 2015 legislature,—priority given to building stabilization—though in the end no capital outlay funds were approved for this legislative session.  The 2016 legislative session will present another opportunity to apply for funds for Palace stabilization and repairs.
