Indianapolis, IN (PRUnderground) August 22nd, 2019

Cohen & Malad is proud to announce the 2019 winner of the Indiana Spirit of Caring Scholarship, Noah Zimmer, from Granger, Indiana. Zimmer is the first winner of the Spirit of Caring Scholarship contest.

As a law firm which advances the rights of clients while adding a voice to social and individual concerns, the lawyers at Cohen & Malad believe this level of representation is what it means to be a dedicated attorney in today’s society. In an effort to further the education of a deserving Indianapolis student, Cohen & Malad is proud to sponsor the annual Indiana Spirit of Caring Scholarship.

The Indiana Spirit of Caring Scholarship is given to an Indianapolis student enrolled in a two-year to five-year institution, who could use help paying for school or school supplies. Cohen & Malad understands that college is not cheap. The $1,000 scholarship is meant to help one student attend college, law school or another institute of higher education.

On winning, Zimmer said he has always wanted to help those in need, and that being recognized and rewarded for those actions within the community by Cohen & Malad “gives [him] self-satisfaction and determination to continue what [he is] doing.”

Zimmer is pursuing a degree in Astronomy and Astrophysics from Indiana University and hopes to someday work for NASA, SpaceX, or to teach Astronomy.

In his essay Zimmer related a story about a routine dinner with his family—routine, that is, until during the dinner conversation his father told the family that one out of every four children in St. Joseph County go without food on any given day.

Zimmer recalls being taken aback by this information as he looked at the abundance of food on his own dinner table. He confesses to never worrying about whether there would be food on the table, therefore, never really thinking about those who were not so fortunate.

After hearing his father’s news about hungry children in his area, Zimmer and his sister created a food insecurity program known as Meat Hunger. The goal of the program was to make an impact, helping those who went to bed hungry at night in their own community. Zimmer and his sister raised funds and received donations from local businesses and individuals, creating a buyer’s group in the St. Joseph County 4-H livestock auction. With this buyer’s group, livestock animals could be purchased from 4-H members, then given to partners Hoosiers Feeding the Hungry and Cultivate, who send the livestock off to be process, then distributed to the Northern Indiana Food Bank.

Within the first year of starting the program, Meat Hunger provided 24,000 protein-based meals to the hungry in St. Joseph County. Zimmer says he gained a true understanding of the definition and importance of community through the project—a group of people who share a similar interest in making a difference in the world. Zimmer also said he has seen what the community can do when it comes together to accomplish something amazing.

The Cohen & Malad team recognizes Zimmer’s desire to make a positive change in his community and are honored to support a dedicated young man in his pursuit of higher education. The firm wishes Zimmer all the best as he pursues his dream of his own education as well as his aspirations to help those in his community who are less fortunate. Cohen & Malad looks forward to watching him change the world through helping his community.
