Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville Loses World Record Title for Largest Margarita to Nick Nicora

Industry: Food & Drink

Nick Nicora set a new Guinness world record for the largest cocktail, a 10,500 gallon Calarita Margarita on Friday the 13th at the California State Fair in Sacramento.

Sacramento, CA (PRUnderground) July 16th, 2012

Nick Nicora, a co-owner of one of the country’s largest food and beverage service providers, Ovations Food Services, partnered with Ricardo Hussong, owner of Cantina Hussong’s, the inventor of the Margarita in Ensinada Mexico in 1940, to claim the Guinness title for making the world’s largest margarita – a title, that until Friday, was held by Jimmy Buffett and his Margaritaville in Las Vegas.

“Taking claim of the Guinness world record for the largest Calarita Margarita cocktail from an institution like Margaritaville is nothing short of extraordinary,” said Christopher Ford, Co-Founder at Stitches ‘n Dishes. “Coordinating the resources necessary to pull this off required razor sharp attention to detail, and probably the mind of a mad scientist.”

Nicora says that claiming the world record was a community effort.

“We reached out to the community, and the community reached back. It can’t be just me; it can’t be just Ricardo. It’s got to be the whole team. It’s pretty exciting. I’ve got to tell you what’s amazing about it is how many people came together to do this,” he said.

Official witnesses for Guinness were on hand throughout the day at the California State Fair at Cal Expo in Sacramento where the new record was set, bringing Sacramento its fifth world record since 1979.

Phil and Mark Warren, and Bill Weir set a world record for the longest ping-pong tournament at 101 hours one minute and 11 seconds from April 9-13, 1979. Tony Castro set a world record for water skiing on bare hands for 849.7 feet on May 4, 2002. Pauline Potter of Sacramento set the world record for being the heaviest woman alive at 643 pounds on May 13, 2010. Then, most recently, California Capitol City Dawg set the world record for selling the most expensive hot dog in the world for $145.49 on May 31, 2012.

Nicora’s 10,500 gallon cocktail was poured into a 25-foot tall, 20 horse power blender made by Westec Tank and Equipment Co. by More than 20 volunteers and members of a charity organization.

The drink contains 4,650 bottles – that’s 2,100 gallons – of Jose Cuervo Gold Tacquila, and 8,400 gallons of margarita mix, including 50 gallons of lime mix, and 20 gallons of Cointreau liqueur.

This won’t be Nicora’s first entry in the Guinness Book of Records. Last year, he claimed the world record title for the World’s Largest Commercially Available Hamburger at the Alameda County Fair over the Independence Day weekend. The burger weighed in at 777 pounds.

Nicora’s youngest son, Andrew Nicora, co-founder of Stitches ‘n Dishes began announcing his father’s planned attempt to break the record last week in Twitter conversations using hash tag #Calarita.

Nicora’s prized cocktail recipe yields 134,000 Calarita Margaritas and beats Buffet’s 8,500 gallon record set in 2011 by 2,000 gallons. Nicora and Hussong kicked off happy hour at the Cantina Hussong’s Cal Expo location immediately following their claim to victory. The World’s Largest Margarita will be served at the California State Fair, Cal Expo in Sacramento in souvenir cups and shakers until July 31, 2012.
