Hoffoss Devall is proud to announce the winners of the Safe Driver and Problem Solver Scholarships for 2019—Andie Bostick and Madison Theriot. Hoffoss Devall is a premier firm in Southwest Louisiana, well-known for helping those who have been injured through the negligence of others obtain the medical care they need and deserve.

As a continuance of that investment in community, Hoffoss Devall created two annual scholarships. The first, the Louisiana Safe Driver Scholarship, awards $2,000 to a Louisiana high school senior who is enrolled in a two-year to five-year institution in the state of Louisiana. Application for the Louisiana Safe Driver Scholarship requires the submission of a short video or essay which addresses distracted driving. The second scholarship is known as the Hoffoss Devall Problem Solver Scholarship, which awards $2,000 to the student who best answers the question of “If you had $1 million, what problem would you try to solve, and how would you do it?”

Andie Bostick, the winner of the second annual Hoffoss Devall Safe Driver Scholarship, is currently enrolled in the University of Louisiana, Lafayette.

On winning the scholarship Bostick says that it “has been the highlight of [her] summer.” Helping her to relieve some of the financial stress of the upcoming semester and allowing more time for focus on studies and less on making money. Bostick is majoring in Civil Engineering, with a goal of studying traffic, structures and other cityscape architecture.

Bostick’s essay detailed the extreme freeze experienced by those in Lafayette, Louisiana. Since Lafayette weather is more likely to be hot and humid, few drivers in the area knew how to deal with the freezing weather. During this unusual weather, Bostick’s cousin was walking home with his brother and his brother’s girlfriend when a truck, driving extremely fast, hit Bostick’s cousin, killing him immediately. This event in Bostick’s life fostered a feeling of responsibility toward others on the roadways.

Bostick hopes persistence will help others understand the importance of staying aware while driving, and knowing writing that “…a text, call or song can wait. Nothing on our phones are more important than a life.”

Madison Theriot is the winner of the second annual Hoffoss Devall Problem Solver Scholarship. Theriot is a sophomore, studying Nursing at McNeese State University. Theriot notes that winning the scholarship allows continuation of her education without the burden of worrying about finances. Theriot hopes to eventually return to school to become a Nurse Practitioner.

If Theriot had a million dollars to solve a problem, she explained she would start an organization which helps the less fortunate grade school students in her area.

“I would create a “Safe Room” that would provide them with the materials they may not have access to at home,” Theriot said.

Theriot included access to such items as school clothing, school supplies and food in her Safe Room, as well as access to a washer and dryer so each student could have clean clothing. A trustworthy adult would be designated to oversee the Safe Room in each school, protecting the confidentiality of students needing assistance.

The one million dollars would go toward getting the program started and buying all the materials; once the Safe Rooms were set up, donations for the project would be encouraged. Theriot believes these Safe Rooms would aid students in feeling successful and secure in school, allowing them to thrive despite at-home worries and troubles.

Bostick and Theriot are shining examples of our future, and Hoffoss Devall is proud to help fund the education of these two students. The firm recognizes the desire these students have to create necessary changes in our world, impacting their community and state. Hoffoss Devall wishes these two young adults all the best as they pursue their dreams.
