Nadia Hatta Standout Performance in Netflix Original Series “Away” Leads Back to North America

Nadia Hatta recently surprised the Netflix global audience by delivering a screen-stealing performance in original series, Away.

Starring Hilary Swank, the show catapulted to the number one spot after two days of its release on Netflix, bumping out Cobra Kai where it remained for over two weeks. The series follows Emma Green (Hilary Swank) leading a team of international astronauts on the first manned mission to Mars.

Hatta guest-starred in three of the ten episodes in her North American debut, delivering a standout performance and creating a demand from the audience for her return in the second season. According to the IMDb STARmeter, Hatta was the most searched performer in Away on the database by a stretch just after the the lead cast.

In the series, Hatta portrays Mei Chen, a CapCom from China working in NASA. The third episode reveals that she is the secret queer love interest of Lu Wang, the Chinese astronaut on the mission to Mars who’s in a loveless marriage with her husband and has a son. Their government made every effort to sweep it under the rug to avoid national embarrassment when their secret was revealed.

Besides gaining praise for her performance, her role has been applauded for its authentic representation of Asians in Hollywood and boldly winning the hearts of the LGBTQ+ community, especially the queer Asian community. It also controversially gained similar praise in Chinese social media, and also to finally see accurate portrayal of Chinese characters in Western media.

Hatta is now based in North America to for the next phase in her career.
