Black Rose Writing recently announced the release of “Deadly Homecoming at Rosemont, A Wrenn Grayson Mystery,” written by bestselling author Connie Chappell.

Mystery and history combine beautifully in Chappell’s more-than-capable hands. Protagonist Wrenn Grayson is a local historian hailing from the fictitious town of Havens, Ohio.

Wrenn arrives at the Rosemont mansion expecting to receive payment for her services from the mansion’s new owner, Clay Addison. That expectation dies when she and Clay find Trey Rosemont murdered on the foyer floor. Across town, police officers race to Eastwood University. Priceless Egyptian artifacts were stolen from the history department safe. Wrenn’s longtime love, Eastwood professor Gideon Douglas, heads the department. Only recovery of the artifacts will save his career.

Life in Havens, doesn’t stop for this crime spree. Wrenn works for Mayor K.C. Tallmadge. He wishes Wrenn would stop searching down clues ahead of the police and pacify temperamental playwright Barton Reed. Barton’s play is just days away from opening in the town’s historic Baxter Theater.

Amid murder, theft, or curtain calls, Wrenn’s instincts prove sharp. But it’s her stubborn one-woman approach that places her directly in the killer’s path.

Reviewers predict that Wrenn Grayson will become the reader’s next favorite fictional character. Her intelligence, tenacity, and charm will hook the mystery lover from discovery of the body to the very satisfying conclusion. “Deadly Homecoming at Rosemont” is a novel described as both a welcome addition to small town mysteries and one that is delightfully witty and drunk with atmosphere.

Author Connie Chappell wraps realistic descriptions to the crime setup and artistically describes the town. The intertwining mysteries are well-plotted, throwing challenges into Wrenn’s life and keeping the reader flipping pages.

Chappell writes from her hometown, Springfield, Ohio. “I love the character Wrenn Grayson. I love that she’s a historian, that she’s fun and clever,” Chappell said.

A visit to her home office revealed the full-sized map she created for Havens. Like any map, it lays out streets by name. The map also includes downtown buildings, the cemetery on the edge of town, the Baxter Theater and Piedmont Alley, two landmarks central to “Deadly Homecoming at Rosemont.”

“The next two Wrenn Grayson mysteries are written. For continuity sake and to keep my memory in check,” she admitted, “the map is essential. Solutions to Wrenn Grayson mysteries draw on understanding the past. Imagine a historical fact uncovered in a dusty old journal, a well-traveled trunk, or a handful of fettered letters becoming one of Wrenn’s villain-conquering tools.”

The release of this mystery follows on the heels of Chappell’s success with her debut novel, “Wild Raspberries,” winner of the 2016 Maxy Award for Best Literary Fiction.

The words associated with this award aptly describe the author and what can be expected from her future undertakings: “Chappell does a wondrous job allowing her words to speak for her characters, immersing the reader in scenes where dialogue would have typically done the trick.”

Copies of Deadly Homecoming at Rosemont are available at all major booksellers, including Black Rose Writing, Amazon, and Barnes & Noble.
