Major recall announced for a software defect

Tinton Falls, NJ (PRUnderground) September 30th, 2016

This past Friday, General Motors (GM) announced that they are recalling 4.28 million vehicles worldwide, with 3.6 million vehicles in the U.S. This recall is due to a software defect found in GM models from 2014 to 2017. Affecting many vehicles out on the road today including police cars, SUVs, electric vehicles, and full-sized trucks, this defect can prevent the front airbags from inflating and the seat belts from locking properly in the event of a crash. Since the announcement of the software defect recall, one death and several injuries have been reported.

GM investigated this matter on an unspecified amount of vehicles and decided to recall the vehicles in late August. This is the second major recall that GM has faced in the last two years. In 2014 they recalled 2.6 million vehicles in the U.S. because of faulty ignition switches, which was responsible for 124 deaths and 275 injuries.

How can consumers find out if their GM vehicle is recalled? They can search the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) website for open recalls and also www.recallbuzz.com, which allows consumers to input their make, model and year or VIN number to see open recall bulletins and receive text and email notifications for future recalls on that vehicle.
