Ken Reynolds endured decades of leg and back pain, but he only recently discovered the cause of the excruciating pain that ran down his right leg. “My trouble may have started when I was hit by a car as a child,” says Ken. “As an adult I became morbidly obese, finally having a gastric bypass to help me lose weight.” But for Ken, the pain didn’t go away; “it only got worse,” he says. Finally, after 25 years of suffering, Ken consulted with Dr. James Olson, a Reno Spine surgeon known for his expertise in spinal fusion and treatment of SI joint dysfunction. Dr. Olson’s diagnosis confirmed that Ken’s problem was in his SI joint.
The SI Joint is located in the pelvis and functions as a shock absorber to prevent impact forces from affecting the spine during walking and other normal activities. The SI joint links the iliac bones, or pelvis to the part of the spine just above the tailbone, called the sacrum. “SI joint dysfunction is often mistaken for spinal disc pain,” says Dr. Olson, who adds that the condition may be overlooked altogether or improperly diagnosed if the surgeon is not assessing the condition of the SI joint.
After additional diagnostic procedures, Ken was scheduled to undergo a procedure called SI Joint Fusion using the latest minimally invasive procedures and a system known as X-Spine. “With this type of minimally invasive SI joint fusion patients are able to walk immediately after surgery and have a rapid recovery,” says Dr. Olson.
Ken had his SI joint fusion done two months ago. “I experienced immediate relief after the procedure,” he says. “The terrible pain on my right side is now gone. Dr. Olson says he will soon perform the procedure on my left side.”
