Former Bogota Mayor Steve Lonegan has won the endorsement of the Republican Liberty Caucus (RLC) National Committee in the October 16th  special election for US Senate.

“Steve has shown leadership skills desperately needed in the Senate,” said RLC National Chair Matt Nye. “Receiving this endorsement from the Republican Liberty Caucus is a testament to his proven record of commitment to the principles of individual liberty, limited government, and free enterprise.”

“At the Republican Liberty Caucus we believe that less government means more liberty. We advocate the principles of individual rights, limited government, and free enterprise. We work within the Republican Party because we believe it is the best vehicle for bringing about the political changes we want, and we believe that Steve Lonegan will join the growing number of Liberty Republicans advancing those goals in Washington.”

Lonegan is a Garden State native who continues to reside in Bogota with his wife of 32 years, Ann. Steve graduated from William Paterson College where he was football team captain and an All Conference Division Center. In 1981, he earned an M.B.A. from Fairleigh Dickinson University. As a business owner, Steve built and managed retail, custom home building and manufacturing businesses, employing dozens of workers.

In 2006 Lonegan became the State Director of Americans for Prosperity where he successfully led the fight to stop Governor Corzine’s $38 billion toll hike and helped defeat an 8 percent sales tax increase on the statewide ballot.

During Lonegan’s three terms as Bogota Mayor he cut municipal spending, eliminated wasteful services, privatized some functions and instituted a more cost-efficient, user-friendly government. This enabled Bogota to maintain consistent municipal spending for the entire 12 years of Steve’s tenure. Under his leadership Bogota kept debt and tax increases far below inflation despite massive state mandates and aid reductions to suburban towns.
