Searing summer forecast is good news for Smythen Farm

British business owners in the South West are looking forward to a bumper summer thanks to a long range weather forecast which has predicted a summer to trump all others.

Summer 2014 is set to see Britain roast during a three month heatwave, which could see weather records smashed to pieces and cottages to rent in Devon booked out for months on end.

That’s music to the ears of tourist industry businesses in the South West, with the prospect of a staycation in Devon, Somerset or Cornwall all the more tempting if searing temperatures and blazing sunshine can be assured.

The most recent long-range forecasting models indicate record temperatures for much of May, with the mercury likely to hit a sizzling 90F for much of the month.

Forecasters have also said the blazing hot early summer should last for a long as 100 days with above-average temperatures forecast in June, July and August.

The weather experts say Britain is on course for an ‘exceptionally unusual’ summer which could even put last year’s near historic heat wave in the shade.

Bill Carless, owner of Smythen Farm Holiday Cottages near Woolacombe in North Devon, said that was great news for his business.

“Holidays in Devon have always been popular,” he said. “But often people plump for a cheap break somewhere like Spain over a holiday in Devon because they can be sure to get a certain amount of sunshine.

“With this forecast people can be confident of that in Devon this summer, so all the reasons why a holiday in Devon is so much better than a package holiday abroad make it a simple decision for people to decide to come here.

“In North Devon we have large and beautiful beaches, which trump the continent’s crowded thin strips of sand. We’ve got family attractions, beautiful landscape, cultural attractions, historic landmarks and we use the same currency, speak the same language and aren’t a lengthy flight away from people’s homes.”

Bill said he hoped that would mean many people would be headed South West this summer.

He said: “We do generally see a surge in business when the weather is good and we’re already seeing it this year.

“It means we should be busy, which is always a good thing.”
