While they are both restorative solutions, a tooth crown, and a dental filling fulfill two different purposes.

Dental Crowns

Usually, a dentist will suggest a crown when your tooth has severe damage from tooth decay or trauma compromising the entire structure of it. Dental Crowns will provide full coverage in that tooth from the gum line to the chewing surface (cap). A dental crown will hold the tooth’s structure offering additional stability.  When a patient leaves a cavity without treatment, a lot of bad things can happen. One of them is that the infection will spread away all over your tooth.

This infection will penetrate until reaching the nerve, and once that happens, you are going to need a root canal. All this can lead to losing a large part of the tooth that only can be repaired by a tooth crown. In order to save your tooth, a dental crown will be your best alternative. Crowns can also prevent extreme damage in the future and are long-lasting. They can even save your tooth from extraction. A good dentist like ours at Serena Family will always suggest the best option to keep your teeth healthy.

Composite Dental Fillings

Dental fillings are used when a patient has cavities in a tooth. Composite is usually used to literally ‘fill in’ the damage caused by a cavity. It is tooth-colored which makes it almost invisible to the naked eye. Of course, there are different materials in different colors (amalgams) to fill up a cavity. However, at Serena Family & Cosmetic Dentistry we only use composite. Composite will help maintain a natural appearance of your natural tooth. But, dental filling won’t provide the same stability a dental crown does. Composite can’t repair large damage on a tooth because it is not strong enough and eventually it can split or fracture.

Fillings can also provide additional benefits. You can use them to covering chipped teeth, to do minor repairs, enhancing the appearance (veneers), closing gaps between teeth, among others advantages that a composite resin can give to your smile. Plus, composite contouring is more affordable than others kind of cosmetic treatments available in the market. It is a non-invasive solution and can last for a few years with proper maintenance.
