November 12, 2014 – American Medical Systems has agreed to pay close to $1.3 billion for the product liability lawsuits for the Transvaginal Mesh. Patients with serious complications and revision surgeries from the Transvaginal Mesh can expect to be awarded as much as $400k according to sources.
Transvaginal Mesh were intended for treatment of pelvic organ prolapsed (POP) and stress urinary incontinence (SUI) that would provide additional support to the walls of the pelvis. Recent lawsuits allege that the Transvaginal Mesh is actually causing numerous complications such as erosion, pelvic pain, infection, vaginal bleeding, painful sexual intercourse, and nerve damage, to name a few. These complications will be more difficult to repair.
In October 2008, the FDA issued a Public Health Notification Warning https://www.fda.gov/MedicalDevices/Safety/AlertsandNotices/PublicHealthNotifications/ucm061976.htm, stating that there were numerous reports from the previous years of 2005-2007 where the complications were rare and could be a potentially serious health risk. There are more than 50,000 lawsuits that include some of the following seven major manufacturers for the Transvaginal Mesh: American Medical Systems, C.R. Bard, Boston Scientific, Johnson & Johnson’s Ethicon, Cook Medical, Neomedic and Coloplast Corp.
