Responding To a Need, As DOT Regulations Get Stricter For Commercial Drivers, Doctors Express Jumps In

DOT Physicals are now required by federal law for those applying for and holding a commercial drivers license by the Department of Transportation, in all fifty states including New York. Because of that, Doctors Express of Hartsdale has recently implemented DOT physicals performed by their physicians. All their physicians are Certified Medical Examiners for the US Department of Transportation (DOT).
There are set guidelines in which an applicant preparing to operate taxis, trucks, limousines and other commercial vehicles must meet in order to ensure the safety of everyone on the road.
Recently, the federal department added new requirements to the list, requiring that all examining physicians be registered and certified by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). The issue has gotten more media attention recently after the June 7th tragic accident, involving comedian Tracy Morgan who was hit by a truck on the New Jersey Turnpike. Comedian James McNair, also in the limo, died upon impact, and as the details were later revealed, the driver of the Wal-Mart truck that impacted Mr. Morgan’s limousine had not slept in 24 hours.
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration list a number of important criteria before issuing a commercial license, a full list of which can be found on the Doctors Express website. Some of the components of the DOT exam involves full medical histories, blood pressure evaluations, visual acuity and color discernment, drug testing, screening for respiratory dysfunction, hearing testing, and other testing required to determine the driver’s physical and medical qualifications for driving a commercial motor vehicle.
