An award-winning comedy feature -- unseen for over twenty-five years due to legal reasons -- has just been re-released and is finally receiving its due.

Victor’s Big Score, a story of love and hurricanes, premiered at the historic Coolidge Corner Cinema in Brookline, Massachusetts in 1992. Variety praised the film and Victor went on to win the Best First Feature award at the Houston International Film Festival.

The black comedy revolves around Victor, a poor barber, who tries to marry his rich old landlady, but friends, foes—and the gods—intervene.

The film was an early starring role for Seth Barrish, an accomplished actor who has since appeared in numerous films and television shows, including The Sopranos and Madame Secretary.

The late Elaine Wood, as the amorous landlady, steals every scene she is in. Miss Wood acted in the theater for over fifty years, as a child she had danced in cabaret with Rudolph Valentino. Victor was her only feature film.

“It was a very low budget film” recalls producer/director Brian Anthony.  “At the time I was working at Emerson College, in Boston, and a lot of the talent we used came from Emerson, both in front of and behind the camera.”

The independently-made film was picked up for release, but its distributor experienced a turnover in personnel and decided against releasing a number of films they legally controlled—including Victor. Other than an occasional archival screening, Victor’s Big Score has not been seen in over twenty-five years!

When rights eventually reverted back to the director years had passed, and he had moved on to other projects. But a friend with a passion for the old film became involved.

“A couple of years ago Bill Walker, an old friend and my writing partner, convinced me to collect all of Victor’s picture and sound elements. But the various elements were in two different labs back east, and the original sound mixes archived in Toronto. We gathered everything and supervised a 4K transfer followed by a full image and audio restoration. I thought the entire process would only take two or three months—but it took two years.”

In 2020 the 4K digital restoration of Victor using the original 35mm film and sound elements was completed, and Anthony struck a deal with Indie Rights LCC to distribute the film to world-wide markets. Due to the pandemic theatrical screenings have been delayed, but the film is currently available for viewing on amazon.

Reviews on IMDB and amazon of the newly-restored film have been overwhelmingly enthusiastic.

“Thank god this wasn’t lost to posterity,” observed one reviewer. “It’s a comedy gem that was weirdly ahead of its time.”

“For me it’s like catching up with an old friend,” mused Anthony, “and it finally has a chance to reach its audience, fingers crossed.”
