Akademos Partners with Navajo Technical University to Help Reduce Textbook Costs for Students

Akademos is happy to announce its partnership with Navajo Technical University (NTU), a public tribal land-grant university, initially established to serve students and adult learners of the Navajo Nation. The online bookstore was launched to reduce costs and increase the accessibility of course content for students.

NTU has instructional sites in four Navajo Nation communities in northeastern Arizona and northwestern New Mexico. They are a member of the American Indian Higher Education Consortium (AIHEC), a community of 37 tribally and federally-chartered institutions of higher education and have a student population of approximately 1,300 students.

Tribal Colleges and Universities (TCU) on average keep tuition below $3,000. According to a 2019 survey from The Hope Center which surveyed 1,050 tribal college students, 62% of respondents were food insecure in the prior 30 days, and 69% of respondents were housing insecure in the previous year. Affordable and accessible textbooks and course materials are an important part of keeping overall higher education program costs down.

Navajo Technical University also uses the Akademos Bookstore Charge Program to allow each student to purchase course materials before the start of the term with one simple click.

“As tribal colleges and universities continue to explore new and creative approaches to enhance value and improve the student experience, an online bookstore helps ensure the best possible value for students,” said Raj Kaji, CEO of Akademos. “Navajo Technical University’s innovative approach to course materials helps make a high-quality, affordable educational experience possible for all of their students.”
