American Pole and Timber, a supplier and manufacturer of structural timber products in Houston, TX, has announced the Spring 2015 APT Wood Construction & Design scholarship essay contest. The $500 scholarship is awarded to 2 students each semester.
This Year’s Essay Topic is Forward-Looking
The topic this year is an interesting one — with special appeal for any forward-looking people who enjoy construction and/or building materials. The essay topic is:
In what ways can the increased use of wood and wood-derived building materials in construction make the most positive impacts on the environment in the next 35 years (by 2015)?
Who Can Apply
The application requirements are simple:
- One submission per student
- Students must be enrolled in an accredited college or university
- Students must show proof of at least 6 credit hours during the current semester
- Students cannot be an employee or immediate family member of an employee of American Pole and Timber
The program coordinators expect most applications and essays to come from students in the fields of architecture, engineering, and construction sciences but have left it open. Eric Lincoln, Sales Manager at American Pole and Timber explained, “The construction industry is filled with people from all educational backgrounds and a lot of the best ideas come from the last person you’d expect so we wanted to leave it open. We’re looking for great ideas and the ability to communicate them.”
Deadline & Important Dates
There are only 2 dates students should remember:
- March 31, 2015 — the deadline for submitting entries (recently extended)
- April 30, 2015 — scholarship winners will be announced
Anyone interested in submitting an essay should enter their information as soon as possible at the scholarship page on American Pole and Timber’s website. That link is below.
The Selection Process
A committee at American Pole and Timber selects the winning scholarships. The primary factors in the deciding the winners are quality and originality of the idea(s), a high level of understanding of the subject matter, and the ability to communicate the idea(s) clearly and effectively. Students are not required to submit drawings or other illustrations but those certainly make an impact on the overall quality of the essay.
