Minimally Invasive Neurosurgery of Texas (MINT) is a renowned health facility that has substituted traditional surgeries with Minimally Invasive Surgical techniques that are less painful and ensure reduced blood loss during the operation. The clinic is headed by Dr. Scott Kutz, a board-certified neurosurgeon specializing in the treatment of spinal conditions. MINT has recently published a series of articles that discuss the effectiveness of several MIS techniques. One such article has captured significant attention because it highlights how the Anterior Lumbar Interbody Fusion (ALIF) technique enabled a world-famous golf player to defeat his back pain once and for all and win a title in 2019.

The athlete under the spotlight first complained about having back pain in 2014. The initial diagnosis revealed that a damaged disc in the spine was pinching his nerve in the back. He took medications and attended physiotherapy sessions but could not get rid of the pain. Since then, he underwent two surgeries. A microdiscectomy surgery in 2014, and another surgery in 2015. Although, both the surgeries were successful, they had caused the narrowing of the disc in his lumbar spine, which resulted in unabated back pain. Eventually, in 2017, the golfer met Dr. Richard Guyer, who prescribed him a spinal fusion surgery.

Dr. Guyer carefully studied the golfer’s case before identifying the optimal MIS technique that would help him get rid of his pain. “After he recovers from surgery, he will gradually begin his rehabilitation until he is completely healed. Once that’s accomplished, his workouts will be geared to allowing him to return to competitive golf.”, said Dr. Guyer.

After performing the ALIF procedure successfully, Dr. Guyer prescribed the athlete to take rest for at least 6 to 8 months. During the rehabilitation period, the athlete a physical therapist under the guidance of the surgeon helped him for 8 months to relieve pain and eliminate the discomfort. Since the golfer was compliant with his surgeon’s recommendations, he was finally able to enjoy a pain-free life and entertain his fans again. Not only was he able to play golf again, but the maestro lifted the trophy in the 2019 Masters tournament.
