Author Janitta Nichols is announcing the launch of a new memoir on Christmas Day, The Secrets Of My Mother: Breaking Free From Generational Curses And Trauma. The book will be available for purchase at https://www.janittanichols.com.
Nichols chronicles her childhood experiences of sexual and physical abuse at the hands of family members. In recalling her story, Nichols learned that her mother and grandmother also dealt with the same types of abuse, but they never spoke out about it.
For years, Nichols did not talk about her trauma at this magnitude, in part, to protect others in her family. “But in order to reveal this pattern, I had to include my mother’s story,” she says, “because understanding that was key to recognizing the generational curses being handed down.”
Nichols, a former police officer and now married mother of three, says she experienced severe depression and considered suicide, only to learn her 9-year-old son had attempted suicide at school. “I was not able to interact with my children as I wanted to, and every time my son asked if I was okay, I told him I was. But he was hurting because he was carrying the hurt I was experiencing.
“When I picked him up from school that day, he said, ‘I know you were lying to me.’ This let me know that if we refuse to confront our demons, our children will be left to learn how to fight.”
Through addressing the problems and speaking about their trauma and experiences in a more open manner, Nichols, her son, and her other children are thriving today. Nichols adds that she wants readers to know there should be no more secrets. “Freedom comes in speaking out,” she says, “Your healing is more important than your image.”
Nichols says, “With this book, it was important to tell the ugly parts of my story, because that’s what people can relate to. Showing the ugly showcases the beauty of who God really is.”
Nichols envisions in the near future creating a television series that delivers impact on a global scale.
