California (PRUnderground) January 16th, 2019

Forgotten Tragedy: The Story of the St. Francis Dam is the first feature-length documentary film to tell the story of the failure of the St. Francis Dam, in the hills outside of Los Angeles, in 1928.  Featuring newly-discovered film footage, not seen in over 90 years, this film tells the tale of the worst man-made disaster in 20th century America: the sudden collapse of the St. Francis Dam on March 12, 1928.  In the years since the collapse, the tragedy has been all but forgotten on a state and national level. Forgotten Tragedy explores the story of the dam, its construction and failure, the California Water Wars that necessitated larger and larger storage structures (including the ill-fated St. Francis), and the rise and fall of William Mulholland, a man whose name was synonymous with Los Angeles’s rise to greatness.  The film, produced and directed by filmmaker Jesse Cash, compiles new and archival interview footage and hundreds of historic photographs to tell the story in its entirety, for the first time on film.  It is currently available to stream on Vimeo On Demand, and will be available on Amazon Prime Video and on DVD in February.

Funded little by little by California filmmaker, Jesse Cash, and the support of some generous crowdfunders, Forgotten Tragedy was truly a labor of love.  Cash said, “I felt that this story simply had to be told.  I couldn’t believe that no one knew about this tragic event   How could the worst man-made disaster of the 20th century be forgotten?  What started as a short film project of twenty minutes, grew and grew as one discovery led to the next.  This is a story that deserves to be known, and I’ve done my very best to honor the story and the memories of those involved.”  The film is the result of years of research, and the contributions of generous supporters who wished to see the film succeed.  “I simply could not have made this film without the help of historians and organizations that have kept the story alive,” Cash said.
