Celebrity Photographer Jonathan Matsumoto Expands into Influencer Management

Pasadena native Jonathan Matsumoto, known online as Jonny Mats, took up photography a year ago and soon found his work all over hip-hop, with other opportunities emerging to move into brand management and consulting for influencers.

Being on stage in front of hundreds of people with Billboard Hot 100 charting artists like Lil Xan, NLE Choppa, Polo G, and Saweetie less than a year into his photography career, Jonathan Matsumoto quickly expanded his vision beyond photography into the business behind influencer culture as a whole. He now works on brand management alongside his clients, helping them develop their personal brands and understand how to work with brand partners.

His own photography work has been featured on some of the largest publications within hip-hop, including No Jumper, 50 Cent’s personal blog ThisIs50, and over 25 others. While he has enjoyed this initial success, Jonathan realized early on that he “never wanted to stick to one niche early on in my career when other, potentially better opportunities exist elsewhere.”

After a brief stint as manager of former Billboard Dance Club charting artist Inas X, Jonathan has branched out into offering consulting services for an extensive client list which includes YouTube and former Vine star Big Nik. He has also branched into the movie industry, with an executive producer credit on upcoming UK feature film “A Christmas Carol”, out November 1st.

The feedback for his work has been absolutely positive across the board.

Upcoming Boston rapper Ayo Sk3tch, recently said in a five-star review, “Jonathan is more than just a cameraman. He’s extremely knowledgeable about the music industry as a whole and unlike other people I have worked with his help did not stop with the final edit as he helped us with everything after including the release.”

Reflecting back on how celebrity photography opened many doors for him and eventually lead him towards influencer management, Jonathan notes that he is “always studying and researching because I know that the entertainment industry is always changing quickly.” With so much accomplished already, he is sure to be a daily presence inside the music and entertainment industry.
