Edna Freeman, a San Francisco resident who details the past of her childhood abuses and assaults in an effort to shed light on the traumas so many live with presently, this week published a poem that outlines the details of what she endured during her formative years.

As a survivor of child abuse and trauma, Edna grew up having problems with relationships, people, and loving herself.

“As an abuse victim knows, you end up hating yourself more than anyone throughout the assaults,” said Edna. “I had always loved to help people, even as a child, so despite my past, trials, and tribulations, I wanted to devote my life to being a spokesperson for mental illness that results from trauma and abuse.”

Edna has worked hard to study parental behavior during her tenure as a nanny, as well as her time as a doula, going onto earn her early childhood certification in infant care. Edna has volunteered to help other moms that could not afford to pay for childcare, while also working with elderly individuals who had no families.

When she’s not helping others, Edna dabbles in cosplay artistry, exploring the costuming world as a form of therapy.

“My desire is to work with organizations to help others fight their battles with mental illness and realize they are not alone,” said Edna. “I want to leverage my experience to help others find respite and healing in their lives. Although we can’t change the past, we can work to create a better future.”

Edna is working to lay the foundation for her own organization that will help to mentor teens and children who have been abused or suffered trauma. She is hoping her poem will spark conversation.
