Covid-19 caused many businesses to shut down, including restaurants. About 60% of the restaurants are closed on Yelp. “I had thought of the idea of connecting chefs with foodies online a few years ago but it was not until this year that I felt that the timing could not be better”, recalls Wasim Khan, founder of Mealini.
Wasim Khan realized the silver lining and the need to help chefs stay in the food business. A foodie and a serial entrepreneur himself, he started Mealini with a mission to disrupt the dining industry.
To understand better, Mealini is like Airbnb for diners. Just like many other online apps in the gig economy, Mealini provides the aspiring chefs, this amazing opportunity to make money doing what they love (cooking), explains Wasim Khan.
We have a strict vetting process to approve the chefs and they have to go through the safety measures, especially due to COVID-19.
At this time, Mealini restricts meal serving in the outdoor spaces only. Our hosts (chefs) are getting creative with the outdoor setting. Not only they serve meals in their backyard, patio or deck but some have come up with a romantic table setting in the park across from their home. We even have someone who has set up a private dome tent in their backyard.
Mealini is currently launched in the San Francisco and the Los Angeles areas. They plan to expand to more cities in 2021.
