Georgia Dads Receive Lower Child Custody and Parenting Time, According to Custody X Change
Industry: Legal Services
Fathers in Georgia experience some of the least custody time among fathers across the United States, according to a recent study.
Lawrenceville, GA (PRUnderground) November 8th, 2022
Recent data from Custody X Change, a tool for planning parenting schedules, ranks Georgia 46th out of 50 in terms of the percentage of physical custody. The study shows that the average dad in the Peach State receives 23.5% of parenting time with his children.
Are Mothers Still Awarded More Parenting Time in Georgia?
There is no legal presumption in Georgia that the Mother should have primary custody. Both parents are to be considered as primary parents without respect to gender. Georgia courts have slowly moved away from the minimal every other weekend schedule for Fathers and giving involved Fathers much more parenting time.
In Georgia, children can choose which parent to live with once they reach the age of 14, as long as it doesn’t negatively impact the child’s best interests.
Georgia Family Law courts will consider the child’s choice at age 11, but a judge will make the final decision.
A Pew Research study found that more than 75% of American adults believe that men feel more pressure to work than to be active parents, and fewer dads feel confident in their parenting abilities than moms.
