Veteran PA, VT, and AZ Principal and Educator Gavin Roddy has announced the release of a new pedagogical framework designed to help teachers integrate Artificial Intelligence (AI) into writing instruction. As schools navigate the rapid evolution of generative AI, Roddy’s framework offers a balanced approach that prioritizes student agency while utilizing digital tools to enhance the drafting and revision processes.
“The introduction of AI in the classroom has sparked a modern ‘technopanic,’ but history shows us that every major technological shift—from the calculator to the internet—initially causes friction before becoming an essential tool for literacy,” said Gavin Roddy. “My goal is to provide educators with a roadmap that moves beyond fear and toward meaningful integration.”
In his latest article series, Roddy connects the current AI shift to previous historical cycles, advocating for “AI-Assisted Writing” rather than “AI-Generated Content”. The framework emphasizes three core pillars:
- Contextual Scaffolding: Using AI to brainstorm and outline without replacing the student’s unique voice.
- Ethical Attribution: Teaching students how to cite AI-assisted work transparently.
- Iterative Drafting: Leveraging AI as a “feedback partner” during the revision stage.
Gavin Roddy is currently sharing these insights through a series of guest posts and digital publications, including a detailed exploration on Medium and Substack. He has also discussed this topic in depth over his YouTube series “Gavin Roddy on Education.” This initiative is part of his broader commitment to modernizing school administration and classroom instruction for the 2026 school year and beyond.
Although he knows that he is taking a controversial stance to educators who have been actively pushing back against students’ use of AI, he remains undeterred. “Technology does not just revolutionize established fields such as education, it redefines them as well. That is what AI is doing to terms such as education and writing. But what it does not do is render humanity obsolete. We will continue to need skills such as critical thinking and creative problem solving that are unique to the human mind. My hope is that this framework is part of a positive trend towards using AI effectively and ethically.”
