The international IT company Lucky Labs has existed since 2006, and all this time it has been actively involved in charitable activities. The largest company’s office is located in Kiev, therefore the most serious corporate social responsibility projects of Lucky Labs are represented in Ukraine. Among the areas of charity there are helping low-income families and orphans, reforming libraries, developing student start-ups and teaching schoolchildren to program. In 2017, book publishing also got to this list.

“We have been working in Ukraine for a long time and believe that this country has a strong personnel potential. And we are interested in it increasing each passing year. All our charitable activities are directed towards this. And that is why we decided to launch the project of publishing and popularizing non-fiction in Ukrainian,” says Sergei Tokarev, Lucky Labs co-founder.

Tokarev explains that the decision to engage in book publishing was seriously affected by collaboration with libraries. Lucky Labs employees found out that libraries funds in Ukraine are not updated at all, and the market lacks high-quality popular science literature for teenagers in Ukrainian language. The company, together with “I am the Future of Ukraine” charitable foundation, began to implement LuckyBooks charitable educational project, the main activity of which was working with talented Ukrainian writers and publishing houses. The project is engaged in the release of books and the popularization of the children’s Ukrainian-language scientific literature.

“We focused on the distribution of books in the Eastern regions of Ukraine. Considering the current situation, here children most need help, support and motivation to develop,” says Sergei Tokarev. “Our employees together with the authors of the books traveled to Kramatorsk, Slavyansk, Mariupol and other front-line cities with lectures on biotechnologies, mathematics, famous scientists and world scientific discoveries. Meetings with children were accompanied by scientific shows that attracted teenagers’ interest in science,” Tokarev says.

For one and a half year of the project’s existence, employees of IT-company Lucky Labs have replenished library funds and boarding schools in more than 120 cities and villages in the Eastern and Southern regions of Ukraine with new books. In total, the project has distributed more than 5,000 copies of books. Among them there are books by Ukrainian writers about mathematics, the history of gadgets, the development of genetic engineering, and much more. LuckyBooks project has also published and distributed a number of foreign popular science bestsellers for teenagers for free.
