Minimally Invasive Neurosurgery of Texas (MINT) is a state-of-the-art health clinic based in Plano, Texas. The facility has distinguished itself by performing Minimally Invasive Surgeries that are less painful and more effective than traditional surgical methods. Recently, the management at MINT has released a series of blog articles on its website that discuss the benefits of a specific MIS technique known as ALIF, and how it has worked well for a renowned golf-player who was suffering from consistent back pain.

The star athlete under the spotlight had been complaining about back pain since 2014. He was diagnosed with a pinched nerve in his spine which was treated with Microdiscectomy. Microdiscectomy is also an MIS technique that is performed to treat patients who suffer from a herniated lumbar disc. However, in 2015, his back pain was back and this time two back-to-back surgeries were performed to provide him relief. Even after these efforts, the golfer could not get rid of the debilitating pain in his back. Eventually, he consulted with Dr. Richard Guyers, a well-reputed MIS surgeon who advised him to undergo ALIF after studying his pain and record of surgeries.

“ALIF is an ideal approach used by MINT surgeons to treat back problems. We do not perform open-back surgery because it has many disadvantages. For instance, open back surgery requires the surgeon to make a large incision, which can increase the risk of infection. ALIF is a minimally invasive approach, which is not only more beneficial than other lumbar interbody spinal techniques, but it also clearly wins over open-back surgery.” States the latest blog on the MINT website while discussing the benefits of ALIF over other substitute methods.

Anterior Lumbar Interbody Fusion Treatment or better known as ALIF treatment is a procedure where a tiny incision is made in the front of spare back muscles to approach the spine. ALIF is safer than PLIF in the sense that PLIF can damage the muscles surrounding the lumbar spine. Considering the medical history of the golfer, it would have been unwise to take this risk. Dr. Richards performed the ALIF surgery in 2017, during which he removed the damaged disc, and replaced it with a bone graft. Since Spinal Fusion Surgeries require the patients to spend a considerable amount of time in rehabilitation, the golfer rested for 8 months. While recounting this experience, Dr. Guyers said: “During the rehabilitation, he (golfer) remained calm and followed my advice. I advised him to perform a few basic exercises at home, such as standing, sitting, and walking, which would help stabilize his spine.”

The world-famous golfer experienced the true potential of ALIF treatment and was finally able to get rid of his pain. People suffering from persistent back pain should consult with top-class surgeons at MINT who can perform similar ALIF surgeries to help their patients live a pain-free life.
