New A-GAP Survey Reveals Cellphone Addiction Has Over 70% of Us Sleeping With Our Mobile Devices

Industry: Lifestyle

In a Clear Cry-for-Help, 85 Percent of Us Crave a Solution to Make It Easier to Maintain a Healthier, More-Balanced Relationship with Technology

A-GAP, a non-profit foundation dedicated to providing people with clarity, unity and simplicity in a tech-free environment, released survey findings today revealing just how serious tech addiction is for most people.

The survey, which polled over one thousand randomly selected men and women, aged 18 – 45, from across the United States, revealed 77 percent of respondents find themselves mindlessly checking their smartphone throughout the day, even when they know there’s nothing new to see.

In addition, 71 percent of respondents have even texted a person in the same room or office as them. And 73 percent of respondents keep their cellphone or tablet next to them or under their pillow when they sleep – with 20 percent claim to even check it in the middle of the night.

Despite these clear signs respondents are heavily reliant on their cell phones and tablets, surprisingly only 56 percent of respondents claimed were even moderately addicted to their smartphones.

Among the survey’s other chief findings:

  • 60 percent feel ill-at-ease when they’re without their smartphone (i.e. left it at home, in car or no service)
  • Nearly 30 percent of respondents would rather go without seeing their significant other than give up access to their cellphones for 24-hours.
  • 23 percent don’t go to the bathroom without their smartphone.
  • 3 percent admitted to having used a cellphone during sex!
  • 55 percent of respondents reported that they’re spending more time with their phones than their spouse/partner and feel think that we’re too connected to our computers, tablets, and phones – but they’re not sure we can do anything about it.

“Some of the survey’s findings are pretty shocking, but the good news is people seem to be much more aware of their addiction to technology – and are looking for ways to develop a healthier relationship with their phones,” says Marygrace Sexton, A-GAP’s Founder. ”Through resources like those we provide at A-GAP, people are taking the first steps toward re-establishing healthy boundaries.”

Respondents expressed a concern about children using cellphones with 81 percent believing children should have their screen time limited, but these same people find trouble limiting their own access to mobile devices – with only 50 percent taking some measure to consciously control their screen time.

“Recognizing that your tech addiction is having a negative impact of your life is the first step in identifying healthy strategies to free yourself from its hold on you,” says Bethany Baker, A-GAP’s Executive Director. “Fortunately, our A-GAP participants all agree taking back control of your life is an exhilarating exercise and becomes a more rewarding experience than being held captive by a silicon screen.”

A-GAP, the foundation that conducted the survey, sponsors one-of-a-kind programs aimed at taking participants on a journey to clarity, unity and simplicity in a tech-free environment.  The organization hosts intimate experiences, held in natural spaces, where participants can rediscover the value of contemplation and introspection – while strengthening their spiritual resolve. The ultimate goal of A-GAP’s programs is to create freedom from technology so that people can engage in community, explore creation, enhance creativity and execute change. Participants walk away from the program with the tools to re-image technology as a useful part-time tool, rather than a full-time, always-on companion.
