New Intermountain Cedar City Hospital Emergency Department and Molecular Imaging Center Unveiled

The new Intermountain Health Cedar City Hospital emergency department and molecular imaging services center recently opened to enhance access to care for residents of southern Utah.

The new emergency department significantly enhances access to life-saving emergency care at the Level IV Trauma Center. It enables the hospital to serve the growing needs of nearby communities, as well as millions of tourists and outdoor enthusiasts who visit nearby national parks and outdoor recreation areas.

The 4,500 square foot, $7 million dollar expansion, has nine more emergency rooms, for a total of 22 rooms, including three dedicated to patients with behavioral health needs. The ability to increase access to vital emergency care enables residents to stay close to home for their care.

“Our emergency department expansion and the remodel of our Molecular Imaging suite, including the addition of advanced PET/CT and Nuclear Medicine technologies, reinforce our commitment to exceptional, patient-centered care. These investments allow us to provide faster, more accurate diagnostics and a more seamless experience for every patient who walks through our doors,” said Jamison Robinett, president of Intermountain Cedar City Hospital. “By broadening the services available at our hospital, we’re ensuring our community has access to the highest level of care close to home, delivered in a space designed for comfort, efficiency, and healing.”

In 2025, Intermountain Cedar City Hospital saw more than 21,000 visits to the emergency department. The imaging department also completed more than 57,000 imaging procedures.

“This is why there was a need for the first major expansion for Intermountain Cedar City Hospital since 2006,” said Robinett. “This aligns with our commitment to provide care close to home for the residents in this area.”

“The expansion also gives our caregivers much needed resources to be able to treat our patients in a faster manner,” said Jake Fausett, manager of the Intermountain Cedar City Hospital emergency department. “We have been able to utilize several of the new emergency rooms since January. Since then, we have reduced our average patient length of stay by over 16 percent so far. That improves overall flow, efficiency, and patient experience.”

The expansion also included additional expansion to the imaging services at Intermountain Cedar City Hospital. A new PET/CT and nuclear medicine camera means better access, more consistent scheduling, and a more comfortable experience for patients undergoing oncology and cardiac PET scans.

“It has been shown that we recover better when you are able to remain close to home for our care, near our loved ones. This can be when emergency hits or when a family needs extra care,” said Natalie Ashby, president of Intermountain Health’s Southwest market. “That is important to our mission to provide access touchpoints for healthcare for everyone and better the health in our communities.”

The expansion project was completed in just under a year and was led by Jacobsen Construction with Environments for Health as the architects.

The newly expanded emergency department is already providing care and the imaging department starts next week for patients. For more information, please see https://intermountainhealthcare.org/locations/cedar-city-hospital.
