National Week Recognizing Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists falls during a critical time in NYS as women’s reproductive rights are being debated

New York State (PRUnderground) January 22nd, 2019

The New York State Association of Nurse Anesthetists (NYSANA) and its more than 1,600 members are observing National Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNA) Week through January 26 in honor of the nation’s nearly 53,000 CRNAs and student registered nurse anesthetists who safely and cost-effectively provide more than 45 million anesthetics annually.

In its 20th year, National CRNA Week falls during a critical time for women in NYS as Lawmakers debate and consider the Reproductive Health Act (S.2796). NYSANA is taking a position on safe access to reproductive healthcare for women.

“In all health settings, CRNAs are committed to provide high-quality, safe care to all who need it, including safe access to services related to women’s reproductive health,” said Jessica Pitman, DNP, CRNA and president of NYSANA.

Since 2000, the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists (AANA), NYSANA’s parent organization, has been educating the public on the key role nurse anesthetists play in all healthcare settings providing exceptional general anesthesia, regional anesthesia, sedation and pain management care to millions of Americans.

“As the healthcare climate is ever-changing with costs increasing as well as the need for anesthesia services, especially in rural and underserved areas, nurse anesthetists are part of the solution to help lower overall healthcare costs,” said Pitman. “Nurse Anesthetists provide the same safe level of anesthesia care as Anesthesiologists at a fraction of the cost with no difference in patient outcome. This is something hospital administrators should explore and consider to help manage rising costs. More importantly, we call upon Governor Cuomo to recognize how CRNAs can generate savings statewide.”
