Last week, Smile Builders hosted an online training session for its Orthodontics Team. Among the many advancements available for dental treatments, a recently released update on the CEREC Ortho software was long awaited by the Team. Since technology in the dental field continues to progress at incredible rates, updates that affect and improve the daily workflow of our Tijuana dentists are always welcomed.

Since the ‘80s CEREC has remained at the forefront of dentistry, mainly because of the introduction of CAD/CAM technology. With it, CEREC could capture dental impressions straight into a computer. Moving from 2D images to high quality 3D images in the year 2003, they opened new horizons on dentistry. While the creation of dental pieces using conventional impressions was proving to be less accurate, computer assisted scanning was getting more reliable by the year.

Almost 30 years have passed since the introduction of CAD/CAM technology. And for many orthodontists, the use of CEREC and its supplied camera (Omnicam) to obtain intraoral scans, is a required step of their workflow. But in most cases the workflow isn’t entirely digital, increasing chairside time. With the arrival of CEREC Ortho and new features from the latest update, Omnicam can be used to take digital impressions. This step replaces old silicone impressions altogether.

Any orthodontic diagnosis begins when photographs of the patient’s mouth and a deep interpretation of their teeth and bone structure are obtained. But in an entirely digital workflow many things change. During CEREC’s Ortho training, a couple of features needed to be explained since CEREC has come up with its own techniques for diagnosis. One of them is called “Guided scanning” and it basically assists whenever the Omnicam is guided through the entire jaw. There is always feedback and instructions on screen. It’s like having a virtual assistant!

One of the most promising features is the option to add 3D printing to the digital workflow. This option alone removes the time consuming stage of plaster model. Considering that the clinic’s location attracts international tourists, the patients tend to stay in the city only for a couple of days. Adding this feature and going entirely digital, is both a time saver and a great convenience for Smile Builders’ patients.

Among the team of certified dentists in Mexico at Smile Builders, Dr. Andrea Alarcon is an orthodontist that stands out because she is certified on Invisalign, with over 8 years of experience in smile design. Having completed this course, the aim is now to utilize the technology that was already in place, while being able to shorten patients’ visit time. “This is my main goal… be able to have in a single appointment a direct evaluation of the case through 3D model analysis, and even the patient will appreciate the option to discuss the results immediately, because they are always short in time” she added.

The CEREC’s Ortho software update also features an option to save a PDF file into the patient’s record. This option might be quite interesting to the patient because the teeth are now recolored in white and the gums in pink, giving a more natural look. We know that this will ease the understanding of the diagnosis process for the patient. And being able to offer a visual interpretation of the diagnosis and treatment planning steps, will allow the patient to get more involved in its own smile transformation journey.
