Opening one’s eyes to the realities of the world is critical to really understand abundance, value, and gratitude. Sara Davis, now a high school senior would say that is a true statement.  She was a sophomore at Arapaho High School in Centennial, Colorado on December, 13th, 2013 when she suffered the trauma all parents fear, a shooting at her school, in which one of her classmates, Claire Davis, was killed. Sara, like many of her fellow students and friends, experienced an avalanche of emotions without the skills to deal with them.

Luckily for Sara, in the summer of 2015, she went as a volunteer with her Mother, Sharon, and the nonprofit group Come, Lets Dance to Uganda to serve… the experience would change her life. Sara described the healing she experienced in her blog, “Frolicking in Freedom”, as “My heart had been healed of brokenness and fear. I finally felt like everything back at home was going to be okay again.”

She did not know at the time the impact that her volunteering abroad would have. When Davis first arrived, she was appalled by the poverty, cold showers from buckets, kids without much, and couldn’t fathom the idea of being unconnected to her friends, phone or social media. By the end of her 3-week service abroad, she marveled at the joy and connectedness within this poor community. Sara told TriCuzz Productions President Cheryl Hiltzik, “Seeing that the children had so much to be happy about when they had so little was incredibly life changing and not for a moment did I ever question why these kids were choosing to praise God when they had nothing, it was because they lived a simple life and loved fearlessly”.

Come, Let’s Dance is a nonprofit community development organization that has been working in Uganda since 2006. The organization works in communities through a Seven Step model based on Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs: food, health, safe housing, education, sustainability family empowerment and restoration.

When asked what duties Sara would be responsible for on her return she was quick with a selfless answer saying “When I go back to Uganda, I will be helping out wherever they need me! Come, Let’s Dance will either place me working on the farm, teaching at EmNet school or WCIA (Wakiso Christian International Academy), or helping out at Thread of Life! I do hope to work with the kids mostly because that is where a majority of my joy comes from.”

Sara is currently planning to return to Uganda in the summer of 2016 and has turned to crowdfunding and peer to peer donations to make the trip possible. Donations can be made through GoFundMe to support Sara’s return with Come, Let’s Dance to help other young women have a chance at a future.
