WGBH Presents Performance of BRONX JAZZ to be Streamed From Polyphonic Studios

WGBH partners with Plymouth-based, African American publisher for September 9th streaming of a performance, including a reading from the novel LAND of the BLACK SQUIRRELS.

WGBH and Thirty-Three Pages proudly presents “BRONX JAZZ” a virtual performance of storytelling, hip-hop and jazz by author, musician, and playwright, Mwalim and Composer, Performer, The ZYG 808, will be presented via ZOOM on September 9th at 6:30 PM. It is a free event but requires registration. You can also take the opportunity to order a custom signed copy of the novel, directly from the publisher.

BRONX JAZZ is a performance about a father and son taking time to share their creative work and discuss the rich traditions of native and Black storytelling and music that they come from. Incorporating excerpts from the novel, LAND of the BLACK SQUIRRELS with music from The ZYG 808’s album, BoOMBAPJAZz, and original compositions by Mwalim.

LAND of the BLACK SQUIRRELS is a novel drawn from a long-form storytelling piece by Mwalim and is now a proposed BRONX BOHEME book series, with LAND of the BLACK SQUIRRELS as book one. Mwalim is a multi-award-winning musician and writer who is a three-time recipient of the New England Urban Music Award for jazz, as well as six Grammy nominations for The GroovaLottos album, “Ask Yo Mama” for which he wrote the music and co-produced. At 16 he was one of the youngest studio session players in EMI records history. His son, The ZYG 808 is a 2-time Grammy nominated hip-hop and jazz artist, who’s latest single “THUMPIN’” has been making its way onto commercial radio throughout New England.

The performance will be set in and streamed from Polyphonic Studio, a brand new recording studio and content creation company in Buzzard’s Bay, MA, owned and operated by Mwalim.

Thirty-three Pages is a relatively new press, founded in 2015 by organizer/activist Ayeshah Johnson, a an author and small press services company inIndiana, the press began publishing books in 2017, and relocated to Plymouth, MA in 2019. LAND of the BLACK SQUIRRELS is their first fiction publication.
