Zietchick Research Institute is Advancing our Understanding of Retinal Eye Disease

With quality images and the utilization of non-technical language, Scientia describes the highly innovative studies that Zietchick Research Institute has been conducting. The work of Dr. Tammy Movsas, founder of this research institute, and her team focus on proliferative retinopathies– diseases of the retina which involve the formation of abnormal blood vessels which can cause retinal detachments. The team, at Zietchick, focus upon retinal diseases that affect two vulnerable populations—pregnant diabetic women and premature infants. When proliferative retinopathy afflicts diabetic adults, it is called diabetic retinopathy. Diabetics often experience deterioration of diabetic retinopathy during pregnancy, for reasons not yet fully explained. When proliferative retinopathy afflicts premature babies, especially those with birthweights under 1500 grams, it is called retinopathy of prematurity.

Both diabetic retinopathy and retinopathy of prematurity are leading causes of blindness in the U.S. and abroad. The team at Zietchick Labs has been the first to discover that excess amounts of reproductive hormones play a role in the progression of these retinal diseases. Based on their findings, they are developing new drugs to help combat these devastating eye disorders.  The article about the mission of Zietchick Research Institute is currently published in the Biology, Health and Medicine Section of Scientia Global. It is available as open access so that anyone—public sector, private sector, educators and policy-makers—can reap benefit from it. The journal also has an audio file available so that their a audience, including those with visual disabilities, can learn from it.
