“Femmes” of the LGBTQ+ community have often felt invisible because of their feminine appearance and demeanor, which does not fit in with the stereotypical “butch” or “androgynous” roles of queer women. When a femme is perceived to look in any variation of what a “traditional” feminine women looks like, many people assume that she is straight. Terms like, “You’re too pretty to be gay” and a questioning of identity from the straight and LGBTQ+ community alike becomes quite a common annoyance for a femme to face.
Femme Babe was created to represent the femme who is stylish yet simplistic and enjoys making a subtle statement. Femme Babe recognizes that femme invisibility within the LGBTQ+ community has long left femmes feeling unseen within the very community that they call home, and for that reason, they have just launched a brand designed to help this seemingly hidden segment celebrate their pride, along with feeling and being seen. The design elements serve as a wink or head nod to your fellow femme and to others in the LGBTQ+ community that catch on to the prideful designs.
According to Femme Babe, their mission is to instill a sense of strength, courage, and positivity within feminine self-identified humans of the LGBTQ+ community with designs that have the intent of supporting and celebrating one another.
Femme Babe creator states, “From my experience and perspective as being femme, there’s not just a sole “coming out” moment or story. I remember in my early stages of discovering my queer identity, going to lesbian bars and being asked, ‘ Why do you straight girls always hangout at our bars’, to current day commentary like, ‘Your boyfriend/husband must be very lucky to have you’. Those comments coming from gay and straight folks alike. I’m not the girlish of girls, so whew, I imagine what a high-femme must feel like. Even looking on social media, there are pages dedicated to representing tomboys, androgynous and ‘butch”’types of women. These pages have a strong following and social bond. I’d like to see femmes have that same sense of encouragement and identity.”
The Femme Babe visibility logo consists of an eye to represent visibility. The eye is the center of a heart, which is engulfed, in traditional pride or rainbow colors.
