Froelick Gallery is pleased to present V. Maldonado’s 14th solo exhibition Running Lessons: Drawing from Strava. V. Maldonado presents mixed media works, paintings on canvas and paper inspired by being a life-long runner. Recalling early childhood pursuing immigration from Mexico to the U.S., and embracing recent adult years coursing Portland's forest trails and tracks, these new works act as maps of Maldonado's experiences, thoughts, and emotions. Born in 1976 in Changuitiro, Michoacán, Mexico, Maldonado grew up in the Central San Joaquin Valley of California in a family of migrant field laborers. They received their BFA in Painting and Drawing from the California College of Art (2000), their MFA in Painting and Drawing from the School of the Art Institute in Chicago (2005).

It can be said that runners sometimes race to something and sometimes run from something, Maldonado mines life's highs and lows with this visually brilliant new series.

About the work Maldonado notes: "My dad ran from the migra and my mom ran from the patriarchy! I come from lifelong runners! Drawing as “to raise up or out” – like drawing water from a deep well, or drawing your sword or arrow in combat, or, to bring together or call in or call out – as in drawing attention with our actions. Running is how I draw myself.”
