Rafi Nova Launches ‘Masks for Media’ to Protect Journalists Covering National Protests

Social Enterprise Rafi Nova Offers Masks to Media to Protect the 4th Estate

Boston, MA (PRUnderground) June 4, 2020

Rafi Nova, a social enterprise dedicated to uniting global communities, announces ‘Masks for Media,’ a program providing free masks to media outlets covering protests demanding justice for the police killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis. Their initiative is in response to the unprecedented attacks on journalists at last weekend’s demonstrations that shook the nation. US Press Freedom Tracker cited more than 100 news outlets reporting unprecedented violence ranging from opening fire on to arresting reporters during live broadcasting.

The violence targeted all media outlets alike, regardless of size and location. “I’ve traveled widely, and last weekend’s vicious attacks on news crew and reporters are something I never imagined happening in the US,” said Rafi Nova Cofounder Marissa Goldstein. “We recognize the work of news outlets is fundamental to healthy communities, society, and democracy and offer to send our performance masks for their on-going efforts to keep us informed.” Media outlets needing masks should email details about their outlet and their mask needs to media@rafinova.com.

The increasing use of force by police against journalists is a particular cause for concern for all communities. Freedom of the press is a right that Americans hold dear and has historically kept governing powers in check. Authorities are sworn to uphold the First Amendment. Abuse of it and of journalists should be taken as seriously as citizens take their democracy.
