5 Things to Consider When Deciding Between Building a Custom Home vs a Luxury Remodel

If you imagine the home of your dreams, what does it look like? Could your existing house transform into your dream home with a little work or do you need to start from scratch to get all the features you need? As an expert in custom home building and luxury remodels, there are five things we recommend considering before making your decision.

Location

Since you can’t change the location of your home, it’s the most important thing to keep in mind when making your decision. If you love your current location, but your home itself feels dated, consider planning a luxury remodel. However, if you no longer love your neighborhood or you’re ambivalent about your location, look for an ideal lot on which to build a custom home.

Timeline

Next, consider how quickly you need or want to complete the project. Building a custom home from scratch takes much longer than a luxury remodeling project. If the timeline is a concern, it might be better to find ways to renovate your current house to better fit your needs.

Budget

Now, think about how much you’re comfortable spending on your project. Remodeling your home, even with luxury features, will cost less than designing a brand new custom build. However, when building a new home, you can roll the costs into the overall mortgage amount, which could make it easier to fit into your budget.

Features

Another thing to consider is the luxury features you want from your new space. We recommend making a list of your desired features, ranked by order of importance. From there, think about how realistically you can incorporate these features into your existing home. If you can’t work them into your current space, a custom build may make more sense for you.

Convenience

Finally, consider the convenience factor of each option. If you choose to renovate, think about the logistics of living in your home during the process or finding another place to stay instead. If you decide on a custom build, you’ll need to deal with selling your current home and potentially finding a temporary place to stay if your new home is not finished by the time you sell. Consider which option will work best for your family before making a final decision.
