Brooklyn Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Brooklyn’s most effective source for women’s self-defense, recently concluded yet another episode of its Women’s Personal Protection Success seminars on Wednesday.

The free seminars, which have attracted hundreds of Brooklyn women in the ten years since their inception, are built around simple, step-by-step self-defense skills that can be learned by women regardless of age or ability.

“I loved feeling empowered,” said Brooke Manley of Cobble Hill. “As difficult as it is to think about what could happen, it’s even better to know that you can defend yourself.

Instructor Nova Parrish says that’s the idea. “These seminars are very important for anyone who cares about self-defense and assault prevention, but are for women in particular.

“They share not just the physical techniques we need to stay safe, but some very important awareness tips which anyone can implement.”

Easy-to-learn self-defense techniques are something the participant value from BBJJ’s seminars. “Even having an artificial knee, I was shown a way to protect myself and get away from a bad situation,” says Addie Weissman.

The Brooklyn Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu model differs from most martial arts school because of their emphasis on safety and collaboration. The schools teach that cooperation rather than competition is the driving force behind student success.

The Women’s Personal Protection Success seminars are one expression of the schools’ mission: to make a substantial and coherent contribution to the safety of the communities in which they’re located.

The free seminars at Brooklyn Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu are designed to further women’s self-defense and assault prevention while providing an introduction to the long-term benefits of martial arts training.

“What we do is different from other types of training because the emphasis is not just on survival but on success,” Parrish continues. “These are empowerment strategies for women, not just self-defense ones.”
